SEX DETERMINATION

Dear children of God greetings in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Today many families, even the educated families also are facing a problem of sex determination. First of all we must know the truth that we are all created by the image of God.  God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them and God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. God had no discrimination between male and female. Behold, children [both male and female] are a heritage from the lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. If we agree that children [both boy and girl child] are a heritage and reward from the Lord, then we don’t have any discrimination in girl or boy child. We must happily agree that girl child also a heritage and gift from the Lord God who is our creator.

One day I saw a man beating and casting out of home, his wife, for she did not bear a son for him, although they had two daughters. His mother and his relatives asked the woman to perform special pujas and other religious rites in order to conceive a son. The sex is determined at the time of fertilization. Biology reveals that every human being has 23 pair chromosomes inside the nucleus of every cell in his or her body. One pair out of 23 pair is called sex chromosome which determines the sex of a child. The woman has XX sex chromosome and man has X Y sex chromosome. During formation of sex cells [egg in women and sperm in men], there is a special cell division called reduction division in which the chromosomes are reduced to 23 chromosomes only, one from each pair,[N chromosome]. Regarding sex chromosomes the egg will be of one type which is with X chromosome and sperm will be of two types, one with X and another with Y chromosome.

Some people will ask the woman to eat special food and avoid certain food to get boy child, but it won’t work out to determine boy or girl. We cannot change the sex. The sex of the child is determined by man’s chromosomes, only because he has both X and Y chromosome and woman have only X chromosome. Now we can understand that the man only is responsible for sex determination and never the woman. It is foolish to blame the women. Without knowing the truth, even educated people put the blame on the women.Though we confess our Christian faith that god has created all humans whether male or female in God’s own image, still we encourage, subscribe to perpetuate patriarchy either by choosing to be the dominant oppressors [the victimizers] or the subservient, silent oppressed [the victims].   In the Indian society where patriarchy is a prevalent structure, Women suffer multi furious forms of violent attach from both men and women just because they are women. Gender specific violations of human rights live through female infanticide, feticide, and abortion of female fetus. The Indian government strictly prohibited to scan the fetus in the mother’s womb, whether it is male or female fetus. Although the Indian government’s constitution gives equal rights to man and woman, yet it is violated under the structure of patriarchy. Another dangerous character of patriarchy is the acceptance of patriarchal values by the women themselves. In the case of female infanticide, it is the women who kill the baby girl. The female feticide, female infanticides are denying the female children opportunities of education and developments.

Dear friends, however, ultimately it is God who decides everything in our lives. He is the one who bless us with a girl or boy child. If we understand that every child both boys and girls are the inheritance and reward from God alone, noting else. We must believe in God one who bless us with child according to his will and purpose. So let us thank God that we receive the heritage and gift of girl or boy child from him only. Lest it is our duty of the parents to love and protect the child whether it is girl or boy.
